Check These 5 Items Off Your Store’s Maintenance List

Along with regular maintenance of your equipment and paint machines, you should also engage in regular maintenance of your store.

Because you spend so much time in the store, it can be difficult to see areas that need attention, so pretend you’re a customer who’s visiting the store for the first time. You could also ask other employees, friends or family to do an audit for you. Create a to-do list based on what you see, including tasks for cleaning, organizing and managing inventory.

To get you started, we’ve put together a checklist of five common maintenance and cleaning tasks.

  1. Dust shelves, sweep the floors and clean any windows or glass display cases in the store. Every year, repaint any walls that need touched up, replace nonfunctional lights and fix broken shelves or displays.
  2. Check shelf labels and price stickers to be sure they are neat, clean, complete and current.
  3. If you stock wallpaper, wallcoverings or other decor items, organize these displays and remove items that aren’t selling or may have gone out of style.
  4. Organize other areas of the store, straightening up items on shelves. Remove any worn or torn packaging, empty packages and items in the wrong spot. Keep displays full and organized, reviewing inventory to assure displays are never empty.
  5. Clean up and organize the areas of your store, including restrooms, employee break rooms, storage areas and the exterior of your store.
