Houzz Study Finds Homeowners Desire Personalization in Bathroom Renovations

Houzz Inc., a platform for homebuilding, remodeling and design, released the 2024 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study. The survey of more than 1,200 respondents found that homeowners are increasingly prioritizing their personal needs during primary bathroom renovations.

The percentage of homeowners wanting to improve resale value through a bathroom renovation dropped 5%, from 31% in 2023 to 26% in 2024. Those wanting to create a more accommodating space increased four points to 27%.

“Consistent with past Houzz research, homeowners are renovating for the long term, making significant investments in functional spaces like primary bathrooms,” says Marine Sargsyan, Houzz staff economist. “While changes to layouts, shower area, flooring and plumbing may be unsurprising, what stands out is the growing trend towards future-proofing homes for personal use and the needs of loved ones. This shift has pushed resale value considerations further down the priority list, as homeowners focus on comfort and long-term living.”

The study also found that investments in primary bathroom projects continue to increase, with average spend up to $15,000 compared to $13,500 in 2022. More than 4 in 5 homeowners are relying on professionals to complete renovations. Other trends that emerged from the study included sustainability, aging in place accommodations, wet rooms, eclectic style and speciality toilets.
